angeline koh. food. travel.

2019 was a glorious year of travel and the first time I've ever visited Europe. Who would have thought that barely a year later, the COVID-19 pandemic would hit us and this would have been one of my last trips.

I'm missing travelling tremendously, as would most people. Prior to the pandemic, I would probably travel at least 6 times a year. Being stuck here in Singapore for almost 2 years now, I feel like I'm living in a dream and any moment now, I would wake up and life goes back to normal-- pre-COVID 19 normal.

And of course, this blog died for a while and I have tons of beautiful photos from my many trips, unshared and stowed away. But wanting to see the photos up somewhere on a much larger screen than my phone and urged me to resume my travel photo book here.

Enter London 2019.

Buckingham Palace
Westminister Abbey
Palace of Westminister

Big Ben was under construction back when I visited summer of 2019, so no pictures there.

London is such a walkable city-- at least for these few sights which are just next to each other. You can walk further down from Big Ben to the river where you'll be able to see the London Eye and the Tower Bridge.

Make sure you savour some teacakes and scones when in London.
Hyde Park
When I visited, I was really lucky to have experienced very good weather (for London standards). I did not experience a single day of rain, which is a huge blessing. On some days, it was even bright and sunny! The weather was just glorious and it made exploring London on foot even more enjoyable.

I really love their parks and I have to say if walking is your thing, just explore London on foot. Everything is walking distance-ish. Forget expensive cabs. Also, you get to clock about 16,000 to 20,000 steps each day! If you do get tired, just stop at a cute cafe or a public house (i.e. pub) for a refreshing (and cheap!) beer.

I did Hyde Park and Kensington Park + Palace which took up 1 entire day.  I sat down quite a bit to take in the sights & enjoyed a packed (and cheap) lunch which you can just grab at the supermarket for just about 5 pounds.
Beautiful Kesington Palace where you can pay to enter and they have free guided tours inside
The Shakespeare's Globe- home of Shakespeare's plays

London was magical to me-- my artistic side was just absorbing all that theatric atmosphere and drowning delightfully in musicals after musicals. One nifty trick to get tickets at really cheap prices is to buy them on the day itself at the ticket stand outside. They're usually single seat tickets. Caught Phantom, Les Miserables and Aladdin-- so good, it made me so sad that I have to pay an arm and a leg to catch a travelling cast perform in Singapore.

The iconic and very grand St Paul's Cathedral

Food in London is also amazing. You get a good variety of food ranging from all cultures. Everyone knows about the marvellous Dishoom which serves one of the best Indian cuisine (please queue before it opens); there's also Four Seasons which serves very good chinese roasted duck (but also very expensive...); your usual Sunday's Roast at any public house, which is very English; very good steak at Flat Iron; everyone's favourite Burger & Lobster (slightly cheaper in the UK) ; delicious Spanish tapas fare at Barrafina (please queue before it opens or reserve); and the list goes on and on.

Below are pictures from my meal at Barrafina; everything on the menu is good. Just order what you like!

Enter: Burger & Lobster. Have you ever been to UK if you've never tried it?

I think this was grilled lobster (or was it steamed...?)

Yes to lobster roll

Four Seasons serving up comforting Chinese cuisine for the homesick asian, at a huge price tag because it's so much cheaper eating roast meat in Singapore ok. But what to do, everyone says the roast duck damn nice.
Roasted char siew and pork belly

The famed roast duck- it's good la but I won't eat it again when I return back to London unless anyone is feeling home sick, or has not given this a try. Because expensive and... I think the ones in Singapore are good enough for me.

Museum hopping is also a must in London. I didn't manage to do any during my first trip to London and was lucky enough to visit a second time one month later on a business trip. I flew in a day earlier and museum hopped a little. I was also lucky enough to catch a special Van Gogh exhibition where they flew in many of his pieces. Saves me the time to travel to various parts of Europe just to see his paintings.

And yes Van Gogh is probably my favourite artist because I feel a sense of sadness/melancholy looking at his paintings. Even starry night makes me feel sad and lonely. Which was probably how he felt while painting that. Van Gogh was such an interesting person (not because I know him, I clearly don't), but read books & memoirs on him and you would get a sense of how (heart)broken and sad he was most of the time.

And while I was drafting this post, Singapore has announced new VTL lanes which includes UK! Typing this post brings back to many good memories of London. Please share your experience if you intend to visit UK on the VTL!

And here I am, reviving an otherwise dead blog all for the one and only RedDot Brewhouse.  After a hospitable night at the brewhouse, I felt that I really needed to permanently etch my memory of my visit somewhere and why not in this beautiful space (if I do say so myself)?

Food: 4/5
Price: $$
Service: 5/5
Ambience: 5/5 (absolutely gorgeous)

RedDot Brewhouse should be no stranger to Singaporeans especially with its distinct green lager which thralled many people. I had my first brush with their beers when they had a branch at Boat Quay. They had their distinctive RedDot balloon right at the front of the shop and tables full of green coloured beer.

Fast forward years later, I reconnected with RedDot via the craft beer sessions organised by Changi Airpot and decided to visit their original brewhouse at Dempsey.

I'm really sad that I didn't visit earlier, given how gorgeous the place was. It's a giant open-air one storey house which was built by the Ng family (owners of RedDot Brewhouse) as they used to be builders. Mrs. Ng personally sees to the decor of the place and chooses the various plants and flowers which you see all around. The interior is gorgeous and fit for a dreamy wedding (which they do host as well). The exterior has a beautiful garden and pond, and a flight of brick steps leading up to a beautiful arch. You get a peak of their brew tanks as well from the entrance.

(P.S I TOOK MULTIPLE VIDOES BUT BLOGGER SEEMS TO BE UNABLE TO HAVE THEM UPLOADED? NOT SURE IF I'M NOW A TECH NOOB BUT EVEN TRYING 3P HOSTING SITES DIDN'T WORK. So unfortunately I am unable to post videos of the beautiful place and various beers we tried.)

RedDot Brewhouse is the first Singaporean brewery and features Singapore's only female beer brew master, Crystalla Huang. They've been around for almost 15 years now and we were very blessed to have experienced an amazing night of beers, cocktails, food and knowledge from Mrs Ng, who is the owner of RedDot Brewhouse and Crystalla's mother. Thank you for sitting down with us and sharing your wealth of knowledge! The hospitality from the team is impeccable- special shoutout to Stamford and Jeff for their amazing service and explanation on the different kinds of beers.

The food menu is specially prepared to go well with all their beers and I have to say their grill menu is fantastic. We really love the grilled squid which was super fresh and drenched in slightly sticky sweet sauce and paired superbly with the in-house made Thai garlic chilli by their Thai manager. We also had the sausage platter which contains their beer sausage, and a platter of grilled pork belly with spicy sweet Thai chilli (also made by their Thai manager).

And who can forget about their delicious beers? We started off with a Czech Pilsner which was light and crisp. They won a gold for this beer so it's definitely a must try. In fact they won a gold for a lot of their beers so please try all. We also had their Sauvignon Ale which was a marriage between beer and wine yeast and golly, it's was a true beauty. The beer was fruity and floral and so, so, refreshing! We also tried their seasonal brews- Altbier (hints of caramel and malty, reminded me of very light dark ale), RedDot Smoked Marzen (also hints of caramel and malty but more towards a dark ale). The latter is also their Oktoberfest special!

And for those who are not fans of beer, their cocktails are superb too! Mrs Ng suggested 2 cocktails- Blue Ocean (barcardi based and reminded me a little of gummy bears, although everyone else begged to differ) and the Sunshine (Smirnoff vodka with cherry brandy and hazelnut syrup, which was my strong favourite because the hazelnut really brought out a nice nutty fragrance to the drink). These are known to be favourites amongst ladies.

Definitely give RedDot a try if you haven't already. And if you need to recover from the news of recent tightening of dining in measures again, I recommend getting some beer from their e-store: https://shop.reddotbrewhouse.com.sg/

P.S. They're also pet-friendly so bring your furry friends for a beautiful night out!

For people who think that tea places just serve non-filling high tea food at obnoxious prices, Arteastiq is another place which would get you to reconsider that notion.

Food: 3.5/5
Price: $$/$$$
Service: 3/5
Ambience: 4/5 (I love their plush sofas)
Tip: One for one main courses and signature teasery on the Entertainer App!

DSC09834

In addition to my all-time favourite TWG, Arteastiq is another place which serves good food in addition to a wide range of tea. And for the latter, I have to say I actually prefer Arteastiq's. Their presentation of teas plus pairing of delectable tea nibbles definitely score bonus points. Plus, their teas are slightly less expensive, although a lot smaller in range.

I remember Arteastiq as the first tea boutique and art jamming place in Singapore. They have been around for a long time now, but I have never really been there until last year. I too thought they only served expensive tea, and never bothered to explore their menu until I had the Entertainer App which came with 1-for-1 main course and high tea set (i.e. signature teasery).

#notanadvertisement I swear.

The signature teasery ($48++) was huge and the food was pretty decent. I'm pretty sure it feeds 2 people, but because of the 1-for-1, we were stuffed. That was my first experience at Arteastiq and I decided to head back to try the main courses.

Not the first time that I'm sniggering at attempts to name places/dishes etc. Arteastiq has a name for each dish (which I may not necessarily nod in agreement to) but they're all pretty good.

DSC09838
Rage of the Spartans – Arrabiata Stew ($19)
This is a simple and warm stew perfect for rainy days. It's sauteed turkey bacon and chicken cheese sausages in Arrabiata sauce topped with sunny-side up and served with toast. I actually really love this dish because it's just so, so perfect as comfort food. The stew was sweet and tangy and they did not scrimp on the meats. Even the toast were crispy and worked really well when dipped in stew and dripped with runny egg yolk. But seriously, LOL at the name. Definitely no rage here for this lovely dish.

DSC09852
Boston Loveboat – Cioppino ($27)
Next up is another stew but served in a delicious baked pastry bowl The stew is made up of baby octopus, salmon, scallop & prawns in claypot, baked En Feuillantine and served with Arugula. This is extremely hearty and although the stew is only up to half of the baked pastry, this is not a light meal. I mean the entire delicious En Feuillantine is essentially carbs. Plus you get so much seafood. The stew reminds me of arrabiata but with seafood flavours. Very yummy. Another dish perfect for the cold weather. I really love the En Feuillantine. It's buttery, flaky and moist at the same time.

DSC09855
I get the Boston reference, but not the loveboat part. Is it because it's seafood in a bowl...? #nolink #tryingveryhard #fail

DSC09847
The Royal Princess – Salmon Wellington ($27)
Who doesn't love wellingtons? Wellingtons may have reminded people of boots in the past but thanks to the rise of Masterchef and Gordon Ramsay's famous beef wellington, everyone now wants to try a wellington. The Salmon Wellington at Ateastiq is one of my favorites and it is a pretty big portion. It is essentially salmon wrapped in puff pastry with mushroom capers pate, served with sautéed asparagus, cabbages, and lemon butter sauce. Do note that this dish takes about 20mins to make.

I love the addition of lemon butter tanginess to the chunky salmon. The sauce isn't cloying and is therefore a welcomed addition to an otherwise slightly dry dish. But I suspect it's part of being wrapped up in puff pastry like a dumpling.

DSC09845
Truffle Sweet Potato Fries ($15)
The usual suspect for an appetizer, the sweet potato fries are served with Horseradish Aioli. I couldn't taste much of the horseradish though (thank god. But bad news for horseradish fans I guess...). But their sweet potato fries are really sweet and fried to a crispy orangey-brown and so very addictive. Would love to have more truffle to go with the fries though.

Now ladies, if your man refuses to go for a meal there because they think they need real food, there you have it! Tempt them with the huge salmon wellington (and one-for-one deal)!

Edit: At the time of writing this, TWG has revamped their menu and half of the items below have been replaced.

Update 28 Nov 2017: Tried their pan-seared cod and boy, it's good! Also glad to say that their wagyu steak hasn't changed :) Do check out my Instagram @angelinenie for more food!

If you follow me on instagram (@angelinenie), you will know by now that I'm a huge, huge fan of TWG, especially their Wagyu steak. Not because I'm 'atas', but because with the Amex platinum card, I get 50% off the entire menu with 2 pax, and TWG actually has pretty good food.

Food: 4/5
Price: $$/$$$
Service: 3/5
(I always feel like they judge me when I ask for butter or water.....)
Ambience: 4/5 (I love their classical music playlist!)
Tip: Ask for butter for the accompanying bun that comes with each main course. The butter is THE BOMB as it comes with green tea leaves and roasted brown rice. So, so good!

Now, just a small reality check - for those who think that TWG is actually a really luxurious tea brand from overseas, it isn't. It's actually Singapore owned and was established in 2008. TWG is short for The Wellbeing Group, and 1837 is the year Singapore became a trading post for tea- hence 1837 TWG.... But nonetheless, they've expanded all around the world in quite a number of countries (including US and UK) and that is impressive!

They're not kidding about being a luxurious tea brand though, as prices of tea start at about $11 per pot, and mind you, it's non-refillable. This makes the Amex card all the more precious. Do note that this isn't an advertisement for Amex. I'm just really aunty. LOL.

Now starting off with my favorite from their menu....
DSC09029
Wagyu Beef Steak - $35

A 200 day grain-fed wagyu sirloin steak served with brown sauce accompanied by mesclun salad and truffled matcha matchstick potatoes (a.k.a fries). The wagyu is thick and juicy, but I would recommend medium rare because they aren't very consistent with the "doneness" sometimes. I especially like the deep fried crepe cup which holds the fries- when dipped into the brown sauce, it's buttery and savory all at once.

P.S. I think TWG just recently revamped their menu as they now have wagyu beef steak with green peppercorn sauce instead of the brown one. But I'm pretty sure it'll still be good even with a change of sauce.

DSC09028
Norwegian Salmon & Matcha Beurre Blanc - $28

This is another one of my favorites and I'm glad to see that it's still on the new menu.  We have chunks of salmon caramelized with terriyaki sauce and accompanied by coconut ginger rice, sauteed oyster mushrooms and served with a matcha beurre blanc sauce (which basically tastes like creamy matcha, with a slightly foamy texture).

I really love the combination of flavours on this one- the coconut ginger rice is super duper fragrant (and creamy so it can be quite cloying and filling), and it's balanced with the saltiness of the terriyaki sauce from the salmon.

DSC09034
Roasted chicken- $26

The roasted chicken I had back then had an Asian influence and nutty tones. I believe this one is different from the new roasted chicken on their menu which is infused with Lavender Tea (!!!).

Nonetheless, given that this chicken I had was juicy and absolutely delicious, I believe their new roasted chicken should be really good too! Can't wait to try it out because, LAVENDER HELLO.

I had brunch on a separate day and decided to catalog the two dishes we tried as well. Though the pictures here are taken with a iPhone so pardon the quality.

IMG_7036
Omelette- $19

I love love love fluffy omelettes and this was one really good omelette and super thick.  P.S. pardon the droplets of sauce as my friend's lactose intolerant so she kind of just drizzled random drops of the accompanying cheese sauce.

IMG_7032
Club Sandwich- $21

Toasted homemade pain de mie with slow-cooked chicken breast layered with fried egg and smoked veal bacon, Roma tomatoes and lettuce, accompanied by a green salad and 1837 Green Tea infused vinaigrette. This is one hell of a comforting breakfast which is extremely sinful for a sandwich but SO SO good. I like that the yolk for their fried egg isn't completely cooked so it's still slightly runny and adds an egg-ier touch to the whole thing.

DSC09025
As for drinks, do give their tea mocktails a try as you would be surprised by how delicious they are. My favourite is the Dulcet Rose ($11) on the left, which is a mixture of lychee juice and rose tea. This is an extremely refreshing drink and not too sweet! For dessert, I highly recommend their tea ice creams (I love the sorbet!)

Okay honestly, typing this post was a bit of a bummer for me because I only just discovered the change in menu and it was only 1 month ago that I took these -.- So technically this isn't a 100% useful post (face palm). Problems with untimely posting... #iblamework as always.

But nonetheless, what I can say for sure is that TWG really has good (and substantial) food. They're often mistaken for just a high tea place, but honestly, their food is good and with the Amex discount, it's super worth the money too. I therefore have faith that their new dishes would be good too although I haven't tried them. And now, all the more reason for me to go back again to try!

(P.S. I was just on another beach holiday in Phuket. Follow me @angelinenie for updates as I will not be blogging about Phuket.)

Bali will forever and ever be one of my favorite beach holiday destinations. Not only is it cheap, the skies in the evenings are simply magical. Sure, the skies at the beaches in Aussie are really pretty too, but they're more blue than any other colour. The skies in Bali though, stretches across a wide span of colours- pink, purple, orange, yellow etc. Even Phuket (Patong beach in particular, which is where I am at now) pales in comparison.

IMG_3655
More specifically, Seminyak is my favourite part of Bali. I travel to Bali about twice a year it seems, judging from the past 3 years, and I've always stayed in Seminyak. Seminyak is supposedly the more "atas" and less crowded part of Bali. Kuta is apparently over populated by tourists. Not a fan. Ubud is known for its rice fields, but I have a lot more affinity with the sea. Something about the sea is just super calming, don't you think?

So I haven't really been keeping much of a photo diary whenever I travel to Bali. Afterall, cameras cannot capture accurately the true beauty of nature (or maybe I am just bad at photography, which is also... well... true..........)

I decided to catalog a post on Bali for those who are interested in an itinerary, complete with pictures of the place of course.  Details food reviews will be out in a few separate posts as usual.

(P.P.S. Pictures are accumulated over the past 3 years and are a taken with either an iPhone or my Sony Alpa).

IN SEMINYAK

Brunch food
  •  Sisterfields (coffee is good, charcoal pulled pork bun, lamb ragout pasta if you aren’t sensitive to the smell of lamb, acai bowl is the bomb—no reservations allowed)
  • Revolver Café (coffee is AMAZING, I bought a packet of espresso beans and asked them to grind it and brought home to SG)
  • The Fat Turtle
  • Sea Circus

Indonesian food
  • Merah Putih
o   Nothing beats their nasi goreng and this is considered quite fine dining- slippers are allowed but guys cannot wear singlet I think. They only open until 2pm for lunch and then dinner starts at 6 I think. The place is GORGEOUS.)
  • Breeze restaurant @ the Samaya (villa/hotel)
o   Literally dinner by the beach. Satay is superb! Best I’ve had! Must go in the evening for dinner because you get to enjoy the sunset. Cocktails are good too.
IMG_6272
View from Breeze is superb!

  • Warung Made, Seminyak for nasi campur, nasi goreng
  • Biku

Bars
  •  Potato Head
o   BUT I think it’s overrated and it gets so, so crowded. You need to get there early and reserve a place in the morning just to get to “enjoy” the sunset by the infinity pool. I recommend you go just to try the cocktails and dip into the pool a little. Take some photos then move on.
o   Also, I don’t like their cocktails. Somehow everything I ordered there tasted weird.
o   Oh,  exit Potato Head into the beach and spend your afternoon lazing on the beach chairs by random vendors which go for about $7? The price is negotiable.
DSC08935
Inside Potato Head

  •  Ku De Ta
o   OMG this is the best bar/beach house everrrr. I recommend coming here and chilling at night because the sky is always FULL OF STARS and if u get the sofa beds, you get to enjoy sound/sight of the waves crashing onto the shore too
o   The cocktails ARE SO GOOD. The finger food ARE SO GOOD. I love the chicken wings!!!

Other cuisine
  • Motel Mexicola
o   Good Mexican food and great mojito, plus the place is super pretty! Come at night and the place turns into a party!
  • Hog Wild (previously known as Naughty Nuri’s)
o   Must try the delicious pork ribs and sweet potato fries
o There's actually a Naughty Nuri's still in Seminyak but I much prefer Hog Wild as the bbq sauce for the ribs is a lot tastier

Massage & Spa
  • ·         Bening Spa
This is the BEST massage place I’ve found in the whole of Seminyak. It is CHEAP and GOOD. Please don’t waste your money on random massage parlors. The Balinese massage here is about S$9 for ONE HOUR. It’s very very good and I always go back to this spa place

Address: JL. Batu Belig 100, Batu Belig, Kerobokan, Kuta, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali, Indonesia

The spa is located directly opposite Fat Boys (yes, they have the burger place in Bali now!). But if you are at Wild Hog, you can walk to Bening Spa which is only about 10 mins walk max.

OUTSIDE SEMINYAK

I recommend doing a day trip out of Seminyak and this will require a driver who will bring you around for 1 whole day. You can do uluwatu temple (or any other temple like Tanah Lot) or explore Ubud marketplace in the day and then get your ass over to Ayana Rock Bar by 4pm/430pm latest to get a place at the front of the cliff. THIS BAR IS A MUST VISIT. It has the view of the sea and it’s a bloody bar ON A CLIFF. The sunsets are SPECTACULAR and it gets full/crowded/good seats taken if you arrive later than 430pm. The cocktails are good and so are the finger food. I highly recommend having some finger food and cocktails first and by the time the sun finish setting at about 6plus, get the driver to bring you to Menega Café @ Jimbaran Bay for seafood dinner by the beach and then head home!

The usual driver that I use when I'm in Bali is called Gede and he can be contacted at +62 816 4718 998. He speaks pretty good English and is really friendly and knowledgeable. Mention my name (Angeline) if needed!

DSC08752 DSC08818 DSC08851 DSC08797

The above 4 pictures are taken at Ayana Rock Bar, which will forever hold a special place in my heart as one of my favourite bars in the world. Unfortunately that day was pretty cloudy so we didn't get to see a range of sunset hues. On a cloudless evening, you get to see a range of orange, golden and pink tones. So, so pretty. Nonetheless, the view is spectacular and nothing beats watching the sun set with an unparalleled and un-disrupted view right by the cliff, while sipping on cocktails and munching on delicious food.

P.S.S.S if you need a pdf copy of the itinerary above, do drop me an email at angelinenieeats@gmail.com and I'll be glad to share :)
