angeline koh. food. travel.

2019 was a glorious year of travel and the first time I've ever visited Europe. Who would have thought that barely a year later, the COVID-19 pandemic would hit us and this would have been one of my last trips.

I'm missing travelling tremendously, as would most people. Prior to the pandemic, I would probably travel at least 6 times a year. Being stuck here in Singapore for almost 2 years now, I feel like I'm living in a dream and any moment now, I would wake up and life goes back to normal-- pre-COVID 19 normal.

And of course, this blog died for a while and I have tons of beautiful photos from my many trips, unshared and stowed away. But wanting to see the photos up somewhere on a much larger screen than my phone and urged me to resume my travel photo book here.

Enter London 2019.

Buckingham Palace
Westminister Abbey
Palace of Westminister

Big Ben was under construction back when I visited summer of 2019, so no pictures there.

London is such a walkable city-- at least for these few sights which are just next to each other. You can walk further down from Big Ben to the river where you'll be able to see the London Eye and the Tower Bridge.

Make sure you savour some teacakes and scones when in London.
Hyde Park
When I visited, I was really lucky to have experienced very good weather (for London standards). I did not experience a single day of rain, which is a huge blessing. On some days, it was even bright and sunny! The weather was just glorious and it made exploring London on foot even more enjoyable.

I really love their parks and I have to say if walking is your thing, just explore London on foot. Everything is walking distance-ish. Forget expensive cabs. Also, you get to clock about 16,000 to 20,000 steps each day! If you do get tired, just stop at a cute cafe or a public house (i.e. pub) for a refreshing (and cheap!) beer.

I did Hyde Park and Kensington Park + Palace which took up 1 entire day.  I sat down quite a bit to take in the sights & enjoyed a packed (and cheap) lunch which you can just grab at the supermarket for just about 5 pounds.
Beautiful Kesington Palace where you can pay to enter and they have free guided tours inside
The Shakespeare's Globe- home of Shakespeare's plays

London was magical to me-- my artistic side was just absorbing all that theatric atmosphere and drowning delightfully in musicals after musicals. One nifty trick to get tickets at really cheap prices is to buy them on the day itself at the ticket stand outside. They're usually single seat tickets. Caught Phantom, Les Miserables and Aladdin-- so good, it made me so sad that I have to pay an arm and a leg to catch a travelling cast perform in Singapore.

The iconic and very grand St Paul's Cathedral

Food in London is also amazing. You get a good variety of food ranging from all cultures. Everyone knows about the marvellous Dishoom which serves one of the best Indian cuisine (please queue before it opens); there's also Four Seasons which serves very good chinese roasted duck (but also very expensive...); your usual Sunday's Roast at any public house, which is very English; very good steak at Flat Iron; everyone's favourite Burger & Lobster (slightly cheaper in the UK) ; delicious Spanish tapas fare at Barrafina (please queue before it opens or reserve); and the list goes on and on.

Below are pictures from my meal at Barrafina; everything on the menu is good. Just order what you like!

Enter: Burger & Lobster. Have you ever been to UK if you've never tried it?

I think this was grilled lobster (or was it steamed...?)

Yes to lobster roll

Four Seasons serving up comforting Chinese cuisine for the homesick asian, at a huge price tag because it's so much cheaper eating roast meat in Singapore ok. But what to do, everyone says the roast duck damn nice.
Roasted char siew and pork belly

The famed roast duck- it's good la but I won't eat it again when I return back to London unless anyone is feeling home sick, or has not given this a try. Because expensive and... I think the ones in Singapore are good enough for me.

Museum hopping is also a must in London. I didn't manage to do any during my first trip to London and was lucky enough to visit a second time one month later on a business trip. I flew in a day earlier and museum hopped a little. I was also lucky enough to catch a special Van Gogh exhibition where they flew in many of his pieces. Saves me the time to travel to various parts of Europe just to see his paintings.

And yes Van Gogh is probably my favourite artist because I feel a sense of sadness/melancholy looking at his paintings. Even starry night makes me feel sad and lonely. Which was probably how he felt while painting that. Van Gogh was such an interesting person (not because I know him, I clearly don't), but read books & memoirs on him and you would get a sense of how (heart)broken and sad he was most of the time.

And while I was drafting this post, Singapore has announced new VTL lanes which includes UK! Typing this post brings back to many good memories of London. Please share your experience if you intend to visit UK on the VTL!

(P.S. I was just on another beach holiday in Phuket. Follow me @angelinenie for updates as I will not be blogging about Phuket.)

Bali will forever and ever be one of my favorite beach holiday destinations. Not only is it cheap, the skies in the evenings are simply magical. Sure, the skies at the beaches in Aussie are really pretty too, but they're more blue than any other colour. The skies in Bali though, stretches across a wide span of colours- pink, purple, orange, yellow etc. Even Phuket (Patong beach in particular, which is where I am at now) pales in comparison.

More specifically, Seminyak is my favourite part of Bali. I travel to Bali about twice a year it seems, judging from the past 3 years, and I've always stayed in Seminyak. Seminyak is supposedly the more "atas" and less crowded part of Bali. Kuta is apparently over populated by tourists. Not a fan. Ubud is known for its rice fields, but I have a lot more affinity with the sea. Something about the sea is just super calming, don't you think?

So I haven't really been keeping much of a photo diary whenever I travel to Bali. Afterall, cameras cannot capture accurately the true beauty of nature (or maybe I am just bad at photography, which is also... well... true..........)

I decided to catalog a post on Bali for those who are interested in an itinerary, complete with pictures of the place of course.  Details food reviews will be out in a few separate posts as usual.

(P.P.S. Pictures are accumulated over the past 3 years and are a taken with either an iPhone or my Sony Alpa).

IN SEMINYAK

Brunch food
  •  Sisterfields (coffee is good, charcoal pulled pork bun, lamb ragout pasta if you aren’t sensitive to the smell of lamb, acai bowl is the bomb—no reservations allowed)
  • Revolver Café (coffee is AMAZING, I bought a packet of espresso beans and asked them to grind it and brought home to SG)
  • The Fat Turtle
  • Sea Circus

Indonesian food
  • Merah Putih
o   Nothing beats their nasi goreng and this is considered quite fine dining- slippers are allowed but guys cannot wear singlet I think. They only open until 2pm for lunch and then dinner starts at 6 I think. The place is GORGEOUS.)
  • Breeze restaurant @ the Samaya (villa/hotel)
o   Literally dinner by the beach. Satay is superb! Best I’ve had! Must go in the evening for dinner because you get to enjoy the sunset. Cocktails are good too.

View from Breeze is superb!

  • Warung Made, Seminyak for nasi campur, nasi goreng
  • Biku

Bars
  •  Potato Head
o   BUT I think it’s overrated and it gets so, so crowded. You need to get there early and reserve a place in the morning just to get to “enjoy” the sunset by the infinity pool. I recommend you go just to try the cocktails and dip into the pool a little. Take some photos then move on.
o   Also, I don’t like their cocktails. Somehow everything I ordered there tasted weird.
o   Oh,  exit Potato Head into the beach and spend your afternoon lazing on the beach chairs by random vendors which go for about $7? The price is negotiable.

Inside Potato Head

  •  Ku De Ta
o   OMG this is the best bar/beach house everrrr. I recommend coming here and chilling at night because the sky is always FULL OF STARS and if u get the sofa beds, you get to enjoy sound/sight of the waves crashing onto the shore too
o   The cocktails ARE SO GOOD. The finger food ARE SO GOOD. I love the chicken wings!!!

Other cuisine
  • Motel Mexicola
o   Good Mexican food and great mojito, plus the place is super pretty! Come at night and the place turns into a party!
  • Hog Wild (previously known as Naughty Nuri’s)
o   Must try the delicious pork ribs and sweet potato fries
o There's actually a Naughty Nuri's still in Seminyak but I much prefer Hog Wild as the bbq sauce for the ribs is a lot tastier

Massage & Spa
  • ·         Bening Spa
This is the BEST massage place I’ve found in the whole of Seminyak. It is CHEAP and GOOD. Please don’t waste your money on random massage parlors. The Balinese massage here is about S$9 for ONE HOUR. It’s very very good and I always go back to this spa place

Address: JL. Batu Belig 100, Batu Belig, Kerobokan, Kuta, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali, Indonesia

The spa is located directly opposite Fat Boys (yes, they have the burger place in Bali now!). But if you are at Wild Hog, you can walk to Bening Spa which is only about 10 mins walk max.

OUTSIDE SEMINYAK

I recommend doing a day trip out of Seminyak and this will require a driver who will bring you around for 1 whole day. You can do uluwatu temple (or any other temple like Tanah Lot) or explore Ubud marketplace in the day and then get your ass over to Ayana Rock Bar by 4pm/430pm latest to get a place at the front of the cliff. THIS BAR IS A MUST VISIT. It has the view of the sea and it’s a bloody bar ON A CLIFF. The sunsets are SPECTACULAR and it gets full/crowded/good seats taken if you arrive later than 430pm. The cocktails are good and so are the finger food. I highly recommend having some finger food and cocktails first and by the time the sun finish setting at about 6plus, get the driver to bring you to Menega Café @ Jimbaran Bay for seafood dinner by the beach and then head home!

The usual driver that I use when I'm in Bali is called Gede and he can be contacted at +62 816 4718 998. He speaks pretty good English and is really friendly and knowledgeable. Mention my name (Angeline) if needed!

The above 4 pictures are taken at Ayana Rock Bar, which will forever hold a special place in my heart as one of my favourite bars in the world. Unfortunately that day was pretty cloudy so we didn't get to see a range of sunset hues. On a cloudless evening, you get to see a range of orange, golden and pink tones. So, so pretty. Nonetheless, the view is spectacular and nothing beats watching the sun set with an unparalleled and un-disrupted view right by the cliff, while sipping on cocktails and munching on delicious food.

P.S.S.S if you need a pdf copy of the itinerary above, do drop me an email at angelinenieeats@gmail.com and I'll be glad to share :)

Another UNESCO world heritage sight in Vietnam, the Ancient Town of Hoi An is a well preserved little village of diverse culture and architecture. It's also the place to visit the famous Japanese Bridge (which by the way, I find underwhelming compared to the rest of the town).

The Ancient Town is simply beautiful at any time of the day- it's a nice lazy village in the morning, and it slowly transitions into a magical bustling town as night falls and the river lights up with hundreds of floating candles. The streets light up with the famous colorful Vietnamese lanterns. My favourite part is to watch the sun set in between the river banks behind a row of fisherman boats.

This place is really, really quaint. I spent 2 days walking around this magical place and visiting the little museums and temples in the Ancient Town. Be warned though, there are barely any air conditioned places in a bid to preserve the originality of the Ancient Town so do wear light and comfortable clothing. You need to pay an entry fee but you get to visit it unlimited times!

And now, pictures!

The best friend and I taking a brief respite from the heat at a very good coffee house called Hoi An Roastery. Highly recommended for good coffee!

Things to do in Hoi An:

1. Take up cooking classes- we booked a class at Red Bridge Cooking School for about US$50 and enjoyed a market tour, river cruise to the cooking school,  and a delicious Vietnamese lunch. Highly recommended.

2. Eat the the market- if you want cheap and unpretentious Vietnamese food, visit the market! Note that there are 2 types of makets there- the dry market which sells cooked food and the wet market.

3. Shop at the market- but please make sure you bargain real hard.

4. Light up a floating candle and make a wish at the river

5. Tailor leather footware and clothes

6. Visit the little museums, ancient houses and temples
